The most famous trick is chunking. This is actually a speed learning technique where a person will learn in chunks instead of approaching it all in one go.

A great and inspiring story that proves this the case of an eleven-year-old girl from Westholme Girls Junior School from the US, who was able to memorize the first 301 numbers of the mathematical term, pi, in just three nights!

It was after their teacher introduced it to their class and assigned it as homework and a contest.

This girl said that she used chunking as mental arithmetic trick that’s why she was able to memorize such a long and complicated number in just three days.

Another trick that is very easy is to advise your kids to read their math book just before they go to sleep. They don’t even have to make a conscious effort to memorize what they are reading.

It is a scientific fact that our subconscious is quite active at that time right before we sleep. Because of this, the brain will naturally retain the information that is presented.

Prime Numbers

In my view, one of the most interesting mathematical concepts out there is prime numbers.

For those that aren’t familiar with them, primes are numbers that can only be divided evenly by themselves and 1. So 5, 7, and 57 are prime, but 4, 88, and 114 aren’t because they can all be divided by more than themselves and 1 (for example, they can all be divided by 2).

The weird thing about primes is that there is no definite pattern to them, and there seems to be no end to them. In fact, there are many primes with thousands of digits that have been discovered. Of course you can never be 100% certain a number is prime without dividing it by every number smaller that it, but there are tests that can get you so close that there is little doubt.

Just think about that though. If you have a number with thousands (or perhaps millions or billions) of digits it can potentially be divided by all of the numbers up to its value, but NONE of them would divide it evenly. For example, the only numbers you could even try to divide 3 by are 1 and 2, whereas you could try all the numbers up to 65445413216546546541321 and there is a possibility that some of them might work.

So you might think right off that the higher the number, the less likely it is to be a prime, and you’d be right in a way. Yet mathematicians have yet to find an end to primes and none is anticipated. In fact, there is probably some prime number out there with trillions and trillions and trillions of digits, but no factors. Crazy isn’t it?

Perhaps the best part about prime numbers is that there don’t just provide fun research for a math geek, they actually have practical applications. One thing that has been found about prime numbers is that it is pretty easy to determine if a number is prime, but it’s really tough to figure out the factors of the product of two primes. In cryptography, this principle is put to work by creating huge numbers by multiplying two really big primes together. Since it is really difficult to determine what the factors are, it creates an ideal situation to send secret messages using those numbers. In fact, this is often the way that information is encrypted over the internet such as when you make a credit card transaction.
